James Hirsch Lorie was born on February 23, 1922 in Kansas City, Missouri to Alvin J. and Adele (Hirsch) Lorie. He received his A.B. (1942) and A.M. (1945) from Cornell University and his PhD from the University of Chicago (1947). Lorie was a research assistant at Cornell University (1944-1945) and a member at a staff seminar on American Civilization in Salzburg, Austria (1947).
